I'm using the FSE a lot to build my current site project and I have a few suggestions to improve its flow. I'll list some of them below:
1. The FSE default screen
I understand why it makes sense to show the site's front page when you're starting a new site. But once you are done with that and you're working on different templates it's really annoying the number of clicks to get to the screen you actually want to work on (at least four if you're starting from the dashboard - Appearance > Editor (one click) > WordPress logo (toggle navigation) or the template title .edit-site-document-actions (two clicks) > Templates (three clicks) > Template Title (four clicks).
My suggestions to improve the experience:
Default to the last template we were working on.
Display the templates list on the left navigation
2. The list view of blocks
I use the list view a lot for tasks like reordering blocks, making sure I'm selecting the correct group block, etc. It was a great improvement to be able to select more than one block at once from it, thanks!! But there's a lot of room for improvements yet. It defaults to all blocks and sub-blocks displayed. When editing a template with more than a hundred blocks it's not that easy to navigate and it's very unlikely that we'll edit header or footer in this screen.
My suggestions to improve the experience:
Header and Footer template-parts could be closed by default at least, if there're other template-parts they should be closed as well.
It could keep the last toggle status, I mean if a block with sub-blocks is open/closed, it should remain opened/closed the next time I open the list view.
Maybe an option to toggle all blocks at once.
Maybe an option to select the block level depth that should be open by default.
3. View the template in action
When I'm editing a template there's no direct link to view it in action in the browser. I understand one template can be used by more than one page so we need to think of what would make more sense to show. Besides, maybe it isn't been used by any published page yet or it's an archive template for a query without posts.
I have to be honest, I have no idea or suggestions for this one.
So far that's what I have. Thanks for the opportunity to share my thoughts with you.
