Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

Not really a problem, but it would make editing more convenient and less time consuming.

Describe the solution you'd like

I'd like to see the editor offer a preference to allow setting the default block type. The default of the Paragraph block may not be the best choice for everyone. Being able to choose the default block type from all of the blocks would make it simpler to blog without having to do much thinking.

Describe alternatives you've considered

Currently, no alternatives available.

Sort of relates to #8589 and #10136, but neither of those include changing the default outside of an InnerBlocks area in their scope.

I agree, this would be nice to see, ideally on a per-post type basis.

You can already supply a "default block" to the editor, but it's not exposed as user setting for now. It might be in the future once blocks are available server side.

It's also being used when you change your default post format, for example.

I find this issue is still present, I can't find docs on how to set the default block, also I like the comment from someone above that it should be post-type based and the developer can choose which starting block his post-type should have which makes totally sense, for example if I develop a car dealer website and I have a post-type cars and a custom developed block for showing the car then I want this block to be default, also what immediately needs to be changed in core is to set the editor block for writing article's as default when creating a new post, because people expect to write articles and we need slowly to make them get used to gutenberg and when creating a new post it only makes sense to have the editor block as deafult instead of nothing, 80% less people would criticize gutenberg because they are just used to seeing a textbox/editor when creating a new post and not nothing.
