These are automatically downloaded following any update. Should they be listed in the email?

I find those quite useful myself, and for completeness. To keep some control with these updates should not be a reason for avoiding enabling auto updates. It's also a nice reminder that they happen at all.

The "Advanced Automatic Updates" plugin include these langpacks in the email.

Hi, and thanks for opening the issue @knutsp

IIRC, translation packages are meant to be updated silently, and besides they aren't mentioned in the core minor auto-update email notification. By the way, plugins will be able to filter the email notification to add those updates. I think it should remains plugin’s territory 🙂

They are not silent. They show on updates.php, as a single button for manual update of all of them, and each are mentioned in the temporary, on screen "flight" log when updating.

They are meant to be no user decisions about them, no opt-out, probably since they can't harm much and the user decision is when installing a language for core.

I have had clients who gets 30-40 languages per plugin/theme/core, using only one for site and all users. They never go away, until manually deleted the core packs, as fa as I know. So I have been thinking it's a good thing to be reminded about. One line per language in the email notifcation.

With automatic updates they may go completely stealth, more stealth than I have understood they were meant to be.

You can further argue that this could be a thing in Health Check, and I would agree, ideally- But until that a single line in the notification is so small, and provide some insight and understanding to the layman. It's the big sites that needs plugin to control the amount of email and lines.

The lesser control, the lack of persistent update logs etc. are arguments for not using auto updates. I hope this feature will be well received, with its fine grained control and rollback possibilities. This suggestion removes a tiny argument in that direction. nothing "lost in translation" (one of my favourite films, btw).
