The map appears to chose "Color buckets" simply dividing evenly between max and min value.

This might be ok in case of evenly distributed data but it might ofter not make much sense e.g. due to outliers.

e.g. see map below where its almost all the same same color.

it woudl be great to ble able to define define range "buckets" for colors. and or give an option for buckets to be calculated using percentiles (e.g. this bucket is in the top 10% of the buckets..)

A slightly different but related request I heard from a user was to specify a different metric to define the color of the dot. So, they size can still represent the value of the primary metric (e.g. number of requests coming from a particular geography), but the color can for instance represent some other KPI, (e.g. the response time). So at a glance you can see whether there is large concentration of requests that are slow.

What's the status of this request? We see some great new features and capabilities in your 7.0.1 Maps, but really need ability to control the ranges and color gradients. E.g. - Start Color, End Color, Linear/Log scale...

Thanks

Can we get some direction on this request please.

Can we get some direction on this request please.

Not sure if your question was directed at me or not, but I'll reply either way and only refer to the color choices in this response:

We collect a lot of data for Availability of customer devices - 100's of thousands of them... Availability is measured on a scale of 0 to 100 with 100% being perfect. When I aggregate that data on a map - let's say by US State for example - we would like the map to show "Green" for states that have excellent performance and "Red" for states that are the worst. There is no color gradient available for that. There is the exact opposite gradient which would show our best performing states as "Red".

There are additional features/functionality that are desirable with respect to ranges and scales, but I'll save those for another post.

Thanks,

Karl

We have merged #41603 into Maps application. This will allow for users to create custom color ramps and define stop values for each color. This feature should be released in the next Elastic stack release, 7.4.

We are still working on allowing users to configure the scaling algorithm for dynamic buckets.
