as part of the dashboard new flow we also need to think how to help users add their raw document as a panel in the dashboard.

Main problems:

  • Many users currently miss the fact they can add their raw document view into a dashboard
  • For users who want to add raw document into the dashboard the experience reuqires to move around kibana:
    • Go to discover
    • (optional) choose the fields for the table
    • Save search: give it a name etc..
    • Go to the dashboard
    • add
    • find the right save search (the one you just saved)

Would be good to be able to create the saved search directly from the dashboard with fewer clicks

One suggestion I thought about: Since people tend to add the raw document at the bottom of the dashboard maybe we have a dedicated panel for this which will show up in edit view and suggest adding raw documents view?

Even worse, the distinction between saving a query and saving a search in Discover is majorly confusing. I think we need to fix this on both ends - by adding an easier to understand prompt on the Dashboard and by fixing Discover UI.

I don't like putting it at the bottom since user may not see it and it feels like going against the UX of an action bar that we are building up. What about adding a "Saved search" item to the Add Visualization panel?

Should we also rename this dialog "New Panel"?

I've removed this from the Presentation team backlog because we have extensible menus that provide the ability for any plugin to link their editor. When the @elastic/kibana-data-discovery builds the ability to save saved searched by value, and the editor save and return functionality, we will be able to guide them through linking it into the dashboard toolbar.
