If all efforts such as this "predicting deaths based on episode appearances" etc., turn out illogical, what is the point of Machine Learning at all?

In other words, is it right to use Machine Learning in

  • predicting stock market movements - which thereby get used by people to make buy/sell decisions
  • predicting a team's performance in a basketball tournament season (or) the expected winner in a given season
