Cannot install version 0.58.0 - error 0x80073cf9 #18021
Comments
How can we fix the issue 0x80073cf9 ? |
can you provide the log file? |
@jaimecbernardo could this be due to one of the dependencies |
Can someone please update the title that users can find the issue. |
Hello. My report #18023 has been marked as a duplicate from this one by @htcfreek. However, it had some (maybe minor) differences that I want to address here. I tried installing from the pop-up and the "Try again to download & install" option. Both failed just after "Windows App SDK 1.0.3 Runtime Install". No error code was provided. When trying to install from the .exe file downloaded from GitHub, I got a different error message, "0x80073cff - To install this application you need either a Windows developer license or a sideloading-enabled system" I have the Linux Subsystem and Virtualization enabled, so I reckon I could sideload. The log is provided below, @crutkas |
Maybe we could pin important issues like this top the main list |
If we have place. You can only pin two. |
@crutkas my log file is here. It seems that the app was appeared in Program and Features once however it was removed during the installation. |
Not wanting to be inconsiderate, but this and #18032, #18026 (#18015) seem to be more time sensitive than the currently pinned #14495 (a proposal, inactive since February) or #14223 (a bug with webcams and VideoConferenceMute, known since November and 0.48 and inactive for 23 days now). |
Ln51 from @mimimi000's report:
cc: @crutkas One of the issues seems like an issue with Windows system restore. But the setup should continue in this error. |
The error
@mimimi000 Could you please try to install it manually from this link: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/windows-app-sdk/downloads and see if it works? |
Seems like #18015 to me |
@franky920920 My installation fails just after trying to install Windows App SDK 1.0.3
Trying to install it from your link fails the same way,~ |
Could this be a Windows 10 version issue? Upgrade to 0.58 worked fine on my Windows 10 (21H2 - 19044.1682) machine but failed as above on a Windows 10 (1909 - 18363.2158) machine. Is there a minimum requirement for the app-sdk? |
@piersmyers I think so, worked fine on Window 11 (21H2 - 22000.652) |
Windows app sdk is supposed to support >1809, according to https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/windows-app-sdk/ |
@pbargiona Though according to the discussion, stable releases should not require sideloading. |
|
Should I suggest you try enabling "Install apps from any source, including loose files" (this option is in Developer Settings) and try installing WinAppSDK from an elevated PowerShell? |
Same thing with the Developer mode turned on. |
@DFA-2Tricky Have you noticed any other problem with installing Windows Updates, Microsoft Store App Updates, or turning on/off Windows Features? |
App store is disabled via GPO in my organization, and I cannot turn it back on. Developer/Loose file mode is also blocked due to GPO. P.S. I also have local and domain admin, but I'm not planning on removing GPOs for a simple software install. |
0x80073cf6 = ERROR_INSTALL_REGISTRATION_FAILURE The E_FAIL-of-MSIX-deployment. But more details should be available if you check the event log
There should be an event in that channel for that error, and at least 1 error preceding it. That should indicate the root problem. Whatcha' see? |
No problems with Windows Updates, Store or adding features.
There are 2 errors:

It's strange - installation of WindowsAppRuntime seems to be successful but still installing PowerToys update ends with an error. The error log is attached. The screenshot of the successful WindowsAppRuntime install is also attached.
|
For me this works as a user that gets elevated / administrator, but not as system which is required for automation... But works out of the box with the users. |
This is a known issue, tracked as https://task.ms/39720940 and discussed in more detail in this comment in issue Installation with System-Account doesn't work #2546. Here's the key explanation
P.S. When you say
do you really mean crash or just fail? |
Hi, thanks for replying. Well the problem is as noted that we deploy Powertoys using winget in this case to keep it up to date but with 0.58 this fails using the system account which is ?"needed"? to deploy without the user being admin since the Microsoft.WindowsAppRuntime cannot be deployed for the system account the install fails. So for now we have to hold on 0.57.2 for users.. Just the fact the update notifications is not possible to disable in the settings also makes this worse as users ask for support to have this updated due to lack of elevation right. Regarding the package it fails but as you said due to being msix. Thanks. |
If your goal is to make the packages available to all users then you don't actually want or care about registering them for LocalSystem, you just happen to run as LocalSystem so you can 'provision' them (i.e. make available for all users) as provisioning a package requires admin privilege. That said, you don't need to provision MSIX packages. You could run the installer as a user and the packages will be registered for that user. If another user installs software using WinAppSDK they'd need to register the packages. But if your goal is to install software for use by all users on a machine (sounds like it is) then provisioning is the way to go. The installer does that just fine today, when run by an elevated user. It's currently bugged if that elevated user happens to be LocalSystem. The WinAppSDK team is aware of the issue and working on a fix. |
so this issue currently accounts for a grouping of issues, sounds like one item there is a fix for coming for the local system. Can we break this apart for better tracking? @jaimecbernardo thoughts? |
0.59 is now released |
This worked for me @crutkas, @jaimecbernardo! Thanks. |
0.59 worked like a charm. I guess that means this thread can be closed? |
