If it's happening when you click it, it's instantly opening "thumb" size you've seen in Status in Timeline view.
That display is a square cut of regular hi-res image. Then, when full image has come, it just replaces the display.
It should have a grayed/blurred box with scrobbler, to make the user aware hi-res image is loading and will be sooner available.
