Some badly-made ePub archives contain useless metadata files such as
Thumbs.db or even "backup" zip files of the archive.
They can add to the ePub file size quite a bit.

Perhaps epubcheck could specifically check for Thumbs.db or, more
generally, warn about files that aren't in the manifest.

I prefer to have epubcheck use the manifest and spine as guides for this check.

That said, I do believe the epub specification states that all files except the .opf
(itself), mimetype and META-INF/container.xml files are to be included in the manifest.

I'd like to elevate this as unmanifested files are disallowed by Apple when submitting epub files to
iBookstore. Adding a warning (at least) for unmanifested files would be extremely useful to people who are
expecting epubcheck to help them get into the iBookstore.

Is there a recommended way to include files that you don't want normal users to see?

For a while we were including archival-type sources in our epubs. We dropped them
because they were causing excessively large file sizes, but it's still something I'm
interested in.

Can I pay somebody to get the changes done to this utility so it can check for unmanifested files and upload this utility on our website so visitors can validate the file as per Apple's requirements

Feel free to contact me directly at Bob@ebookconversion.com

Thanks,
