MultiCycle

12 tracks looper/sequencer for ORAC virtual modular synth (https://github.com/TheTechnobear/Orac), running on the Critter and Guitari Organelle music computer (https://www.critterandguitari.com/organelle).

Features:

  • Works standlone with organelle keyboard or external MIDI controllers
  • Supports free timing or non-destructive quantization (¼, 1/3 ½ and whole note)
  • Supports save/load (all recordings are saved as part of ORAC preset)
  • Overdubbing
  • Record up to 64 beat loops, also support any number of beats for polyrhythmic sequencing
  • Low CPU utilization as its mostly a single C++ based external
  • Visual feedback on state of all tracks
  • LED or audio metronome

It’s an ‘always recording’ sequencer, so all notes are being recorded, and recording a loop will save the last 1-64 beats (set by a parameter). This lets you can play a loop multiple times and create a loop when you’ve played it perfectly, or decide to loop something after you've already played it.

Usage:

MUST BE LOADED IN SLOT S2 (the lowest Eb), replacing the 'clock' module

Control Overview

The first page display tells you the state of each channel and lets you record loops to any channel, as well as playing and stopping all channels.

Legend

Each channel is represented by a single character. The channel under the 'v' is the current active channel.

  • 'v' points to the currently active channel
  • 'o' = empty
  • '>' = playing
  • '|' = stopped

TRS: Transpose for the current channel

DST: Destination for current channel

L(1-64) in bottom corner: Length of the loop recorded into the current channel

Main page controls:

  • Knob 1: length of the loop to record
  • Knob 2: Turns overdub on/off. When on and the channel is not empty, all notes are immediately recorded into the loop.
  • Knob 3: Change the transposition of the active channel from -24 to +24
  • Knob 4: Change the destination of the active channel, either an ORAC modules (a1-c3) or MIDI channels (m1-m16)

Pressing one of the lower 12 keys once selects the active channel. The active channel will have an arrow pointing to it on the organelle screen. Initially channel 1, corresponding to the lowest key, is already active.

When a channel is active, incoming notes are sent to the channels destination (set by knob 4).

When the active channel is empty (represented by an 'o' on the screen), pressing the same key you used to select the channel will record the last played notes into that channel. The length of the loop is set by knob 1. If the footswitch is connected, pressing it down will also record a loop into the active channel.

If overdub is enabled (by knob 2), once a loop is recorded any notes played into the actve channel will be recorded automatically.

Once a loop is recorded into a channel, the upper 12 keys are used to play or stop the loop.

Holding down the one of the lower 12 keys for two beats will clear that channel and return it to an empty state.

By default you can use the organelle keys to play/record, so the the Aux button needs to be pressed to use the key controls.
When using an external MIDI controller to play/record (by setting 'Midi Src' on the second page to an incoming MIDI channel) the keys controls can be used without pressing Aux.

Example: To record a loop to channel three:

  • Press the third key, the lower 'D' (while holding aux if you are using the organelle keys to record notes as well).
  • Use the first knob to set the length of loop you want to record, play the phrase, then press the third key (the lower D) again to commit the loop. It will automatically begin looping.
  • Press the 15th key, the D one octave up, to play or stop the loop.
  • To add more notes to this loop, turn 'overdub' on and play the notes you want to add.
  • To clear the loop, hold the lower D key for at least two beats and release it.

Armed Recording Mode

'Armed Recording' is easier to use if you are not using an external MIDI keyboard, and can be enabled on the third page. If enabled, instead of aux + the lower keys capturing the LAST played notes they will arm the track (represented by the letter A). Once a new note is played the sequence will start recording (represented by the letter R) and automatically stop after the loop length and start playing.

Page 2:

  • Quantize : Sets quantization, (0 is off, 1 = whole note, 2 = 1/2 note, 3 = 1/3 note, 4 = 1/4 note)
  • Midi Src: -1 = organelle keys, 0 = omi mode, 1-16 = midi channel 1-16
  • Metronome volume (left channel)
  • Metronome volume (right channel)

Page 3:

  • BPM
  • Midi clock out on/off
  • Arm Mode on/off

Pages 4-9

Dedicated controls for per channel destination and transpose (also can be changed on the main page).

Pages 10-12

Dedicated controls for per channel quantization (-1 is global setting)
