How to set up LogMeIn Hamachi

Arnab Deka edited this page Oct 17, 2013 · 2 revisions

Hamachi comes in two flavors:

  • unmanaged: ad-hoc network
  • managed: centrally managed (on their website) network, plus many more advanced featured

For the purpose of establishing an ad-hoc VPN network, we just need the unmanaged flavor. Unfortunately, it may be unclear how to set that up. These are the steps:

For both the host and the pair

For Linux users

  • While Hamachi is available as a OSX and Windows app, it is currently only available as a command-line tool for the linux world
  • However, Haguichi is a GUI app that is a wrapper of the command-line and makes the experience very similar to the OSX/Windows apps.
  • Install instructions are here

For the host

  • Power on Hamachi
  • Create a new ad-hoc network, give it a descriptive network-id and a password (that you will share with your pair)

For the pair

  • Power on Hamachi
  • Click "Join a network" and then use the network id and the password that your host shared.

Now you can ssh into each other's machines within the VPN Network. The IP address is shown in your client.

For ease of use, use the Hamachi menu-bar app (which will hang into your Mac menu-bar) - it is bundled as a separate app.
