Hamachi comes in two flavors:
- unmanaged: ad-hoc network
- managed: centrally managed (on their website) network, plus many more advanced featured
For the purpose of establishing an ad-hoc VPN network, we just need the unmanaged flavor. Unfortunately, it may be unclear how to set that up. These are the steps:
- Go to the hamachi downloads page
- Download the unmanaged flavor
- Install the app
- While Hamachi is available as a OSX and Windows app, it is currently only available as a command-line tool for the linux world
- However,
Haguichi
is a GUI app that is a wrapper of the command-line and makes the experience very similar to the OSX/Windows apps. - Install instructions are here
- Power on Hamachi
- Create a new ad-hoc network, give it a descriptive
network-id
and apassword
(that you will share with your pair)
- Power on Hamachi
- Click "Join a network" and then use the
network id
and thepassword
that your host shared.
Now you can ssh into each other's machines within the VPN Network. The IP address is shown in your client.
For ease of use, use the Hamachi menu-bar app (which will hang into your Mac menu-bar) - it is bundled as a separate app.
