Settlement Templates
Revised : 10 Jun 2024
A settlement template determines the starting resources of a settlement.
Each template defines the standard amount or number of resources, parts, equipment, vehicles and buildings that a settlement will have.
A list of xml templates are found in this directory.
Although, there is a total of 7 settlement templates for use in mars-sim :
Templates |

Mars Direct Base (Phase 1) |
Mars Direct Base (Phase 2) |
Mars Direct Base (Phase 3) |
Alpha Base (Phase 4) |
Hub Base |
Trading Outpost |
Mining Outpost |
At the start of the simulation, users may customize his own scenario using Simulation Configuration Editor (SCE).
SCE aids player to decide on how many settlements, what type of settlement, where they are at, which space agency is sponsoring and how many people and bots.
Behind the scene, the SCE actually loads up the default values for a particular type of settlement template.
e.g. An Alpha Base typically has 24 people and 12 bots and it comes with 3 Lander Habs, 3 inflatable Greenhouses, 4 MD1 Nuclear Reactor, 2 MD4 Reactor, etc..
See this wiki in explaining the use of other types of XML files.
As we look forward to the future, it makes sense to account for the launch configuration of a spaceship hurling toward Mars.
Thus, we surmise that the future of mars-sim would include considering the dry mass of the vehicle, the mass of the fuel and the carrying capacity (the weight of the payload including people, consumables, and equipment on-board) in each arriving/resupply mission between Earth, Moon and Mars.
As a result, the settlement template will certainly be tweaked to suit the design specifications of a settlement as needed.
We look forward to your contribution of ideas on this topic.
