Need Transistor? #2
Comments
The C64 secondary button needs to be active high as it is connected to the
SiD chips analog input. The transistor as well as R5-R7 forms an inverter
for devices designed with an active low signal for this button (the most
common of these is the SMS gamepad).
When used with a C64GS controller that has already been wired correctly,
you can wire the circuit as expected by leaving out transistor as well as
R5-R7 - install wire links for R6 and R7.
Do however check the wiring on your joystick before doing so, the SID chip
don't like being shorted.

… Hello,
Do I need transistor circuit, when I will use standard Atari Joystick with
Button2 wired to pin9 of connector, please?
What function Transitor has? I dont want to use Sega controller anyway…
Thank You

Thank for answer. |
I'm not sure that this change can be done easily with the current design,
the secondary fire button in this case would need to go to the fire button
on the otherwise inactive port.
It could be solved easily by replacing the components with something like a
PIC, GAL or MCU though I kept it as a mostly basic design as a challenge.
Maybe dropping autofire for another 4053 is an option, but I may be
overlooking something. One thing that does come to mind is perhaps what
you're thinking - that spacebar is always on port 1 so perhaps wiring it
directly a across would do the trick as well.

… Thank for answer.
I am using my own adapter, where is Button2 of Joy2 connected to Button1
of Joy1. So can have Fire2 button in games where is Button2 not supported,
but is for action used SPACEBAR key.
Commando game throws grenades by SPACEBAR key. So I am using Button2 for
it. This is working only with selected joystick2 as main!
I will try improve Your adapter to this function.
Best will be on B2SEL one more jumper possition /SPACEBAR/. Where will be
signal connected to pin13.
Now I will just replace B2sel pin4 to harwired on fire13. I am just not
sure what will do when will select main joystick 1 and press fire2 button
with selected autofire. Will not be problem with grounding autofire out ?

Jumpers B/C refer to the two 2x3 pin headers on the board, it is leftover
reference to an older similar project (uses Mega Drive/Genesis gamepads
instead). The are called B1_SEL and B2_SEL here, mainly allowing the
function of buttons to be swapped or have one work as up direction.
I rarely use the social platforms, for project discussion i prefer them on
github as the content may be of interest to other builders.
