Hi

If I have multiple data sources indexed in separate indexes and displayed on one dashboard, filtering this data is impossible unless I use negative logic. That is - for example - to show all data from index A, and only 'z' from index B I need to build a filter "not index-B-x NOT index-B-y" . If I want X Y Z to be a separate filters, then I need to negate each of them on the dashboard.

If dashboard filters would have a parameter to tell against what index they work, this would make the logic simpler and more intuitive.

By default filters can still behave like they do now - filtering against all indexes.

I too feel that its a feature thats missing for people who use different indices in a single dashboard.

We still need this to be a feature...
I know about the courier:ignoreFilterIfFieldNotInIndex setting, but sadly that doesn't work in our case as we are trying to build fairly complex Vega visualisations and we need to filter "dynamically" on the field id, which is shared by the multiple indices we are using.

We could change the data model to work around this (and probably will), but that can take months and is painful...

Ideally we should be able to specify which index the filter applies to.

This is already possible,

Here my dashboard query:

(dimensions.item_type : "dailyimage" AND dimensions.locale : "fr_fr") or _index : "consolidation-displays_pages"

I strongly believe this should be reopened. Vega is a far more powerful and versatile graphical tool then Lens and other Kibana constructors. It needs a bit more love to make it incredible - this way users don't depend on Kibana releases for the graph enhancements they are looking for, and can go ahead and create it themselves in Vega.

With the functionality of courier:ignoreFilterIfFieldNotInIndex working in Vega, the possibility of visualisations is expanded n-fold. We can feed in multiple index patterns into the same visualisation, this gives people more creative freedom when it comes to visualising their data. In a lot of cases this is something we have to make compromises on.

There's an argument for duplicating fields over indices to get information from multiple indices into one, but this quickly becomes a huge increase in storage. Additionally, in some of our cases it requires large infrastructure reworks.
